According to many news outlets, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has given the OK to have the 2010 Winter Classic in Boston at Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox. The Boston Bruins will be the home team with the Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Montreal Canadiens as possible opponents.Â
There are some people wondering why the game will be held at Fenway Park as opposed to Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. Gillette Stadium will produce almost 30,000 more seats to the game. This was the same reaction in Chicago when people thought the game should have been at Soldier Field instead of Wrigley Field.
Fenway Park is a legendary stadium. Opening in 1912, it is the oldest ballpark in the country. It is well-known for having a 37 foot high green wall in left field. The Red Sox currently having tickets on top of the “Green Monster” which will definately be the most popular seats for the Winter Classic.Â
If this game will be like the one at Wrigley Field, the best seating option will be at the upper level, not the lower level. There will be obstructions on the lower bowl and you might not be able to see as much. On the upper deck, you will be elevated high enough to see everything.
Sports Traveler will offer packages once the initial announcement has been made. SIGN UPtoday to be notified when this information becomes available.

Sports Traveler Radio is proud to unveil it’s latest podcast, a preview of the 2009 Winter Classic. In this episode hosts Angelo Bonadonna and Bill Huber sit down to discuss the NHL’s second installment of the Winter Classic, the annual New Year’s Day hockey game played outdoors. Over 70,000 fans attended last year’s historic game in Buffalo as the Penguins defeated the Sabres 2-1 in a shootout.
This year’s match will take place in Chicago’s most historic ballpark, Wrigley Field in what should be a great matchup between the Stanley Cup Champions Detroit Red Wings and the exciting young upstarts, the Chicago Blackhawks. The game will mark the first time a hockey contest will ever be held inside 93 year old Wrigley Field.
The Winter Classic podcast previews this great game from all angles. After taking a look at the two teams, the hosts talk about the brilliant marketing strategy that is the Winter Classic. By bringing in thousands of new fans for one exciting game, the NHL gains more exposure for a mid-season game than it usually garners for an early-round playoff series.
The seating chart for this game will be like none other ever held at Wrigley Field. The STR guys fill you in on where the best seats in the park are going to be and how to find the best deals. Other nuances to this game that are discussed include the seemingly sacrilegious practice of bringing in temporary jumbotrons to Wrigley Field, a park that has always been noted for it’s strong traditionalist roots. Everybody knows the game is going to be a treat, but what is there to do before and after? The answer is plenty, STR has a number of great options for fans looking for pre and post-game entertainment. Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood is well known for its copious amount of bar and restaurant options, STR gives you their top picks so you won’t be left outside in the cold.
The Winter Classic is the hockey game on everybody’s minds right now. Download the latest edition of Sports Traveler Radio today by going to the STR Podcast Home Page.
