The SEC Championship began in 1992, making it the first major conference to host a championship game. The very first SEC Championship winner was Alabama who claimed 28-21 victory over Florida. Since that game Alabama and Florida have met a total of 7 times. Most recently the winner of the SEC championship was Alabama who defeated the Florida Gators 29-15.
The SEC Championship is hosted out of Atlanta, Georgia at the Georgia Dome. The Georgia Dome is also home to the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL. The dome has also played host to ACC Basketball Tournaments, the Final Four, and the Super Bowl. Currently a new “state of the art” Atlanta Stadium is being built to one day become a replacement for the Georgia Dome.
The city of Atlanta is vibrant and offers many sights for travelers. Take a walk through the Centennial Olympic Park, which was the cornerstone of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Special events are hosted here throughout the year and the memorial to the Olympic bombings is a must-visit attraction. The King center is a tribute to legendary civil rights pioneer Martin Luther King, and it offers tours throughout the year, and still provides active community service in the Atlanta metro area. Atlanta also boasts one of the top aquariums in the world, and features numerous large sea mammals and exotic fish.
